The head of Red Bull’s top F1 team admits he would have preferred to hire former Mercedes engine expert Andy Cowell.
Aston Martin added another top signing to its roster two weeks ago, when it hired Cowell, who previously led Mercedes’ ultra-successful F1 engine development until 2020, to replace Martin Whitmarsh as Group CEO.
We are on course to become a world championship winning team thanks to our work collaboration with Honda, the commitment of our title sponsor Aramco, and Andy’s leadership, stated team owner Lawrence Stroll.
Red Bull CEO Christian Horner is at least glad that Cowell will not be in charge of an engine manufacturer ahead of the critical 2026 regulations launch.
His function at Aston Martin is unrelated to engines, according to Horner, whose Milton Keynes-based company is developing its own 2026 engine program in conjunction with Ford.
Andy Cowell is a fantastic man.
Formule 1, a Dutch newspaper, quotes him as stating. He is a highly strong engineer who has done an excellent job with the Mercedes engine program. He was the project’s backbone.
Cowell left Mercedes in mid-2020, with Horner stating that he spent some time away from the sport.
I believe every engine maker spoke with him during that time, Horner remarked. But we’re pleased with our present lineup.
