Coventry NEWS: “Absolutely fantastic” – Liam Kitching concern dismissed in Coventry City claim

Liam Kitching, a Coventry City defender, received his third red card of the season in the Sky Blues’ recent goalless draw at Blackburn.

Kitching joined Coventry City from Barnsley last summer, with Mark Robins’ side paying a reputed £4 million to bring the highly regarded defender to the CBS Arena.

However, while the 24-year-old has done admirably for the Sky Blues this season, his discipline may be a source of concern for some at the club, since three red cards in one season is not ideal.

His first came on Boxing Day against Sheffield Wednesday, when he was shown a straight red card by referee Oliver Langford after a clash with Owls’ player Bambo Diaby, prompting Coventry manager Mark Robins to claim Kitching was the innocent party after being the victim of ‘assault’.

He was sent off for the second time this season against Norwich in February after receiving two yellow cards, and he was given a straight red at Ewood Park on Saturday.

Liam Kitching’s third red card of the season is not a problem for Coventry City supporters.
Despite Liam Kitching receiving three cards this season, all of which have occurred since Christmas, Football League World’s Coventry City fan analyst Neil does not believe it is a major cause for concern.
“Mark Robins has already stated that he will wrap his arm around him, but if you look at the red cards, the first came after he was headbutted away against Sheffield Wednesday, and I’m not sure how that was a red card, but it is what it is, and he had put in a man-of-the-match performance – he was phenomenal that day.

“The other two have been last-man pullbacks on forwards who have been through on goal.”

“Robins said something about if he was in the right position he doesn’t have to make those challenges, which is true, but he’s done what a lot of centre-backs would do.”

Despite the red cards, Liam Kitching had a decent first season.

Absolutely fantastic" - Liam Kitching concern dismissed in Coventry City claim

Considering he had made the move up from League One, Kitching has fitted in well at Coventry City, and while being sent off three times is not ideal, he will be satisfied with his performance.

As our Coventry City fan pundit pointed out above, the Sky Blues fans have been happy with Kitching’s performance this season, and he’s sure to improve much more in the coming years.

He has made 32 appearances in all competitions for Mark Robins’ side since joining at the end of the summer transfer window, and he has been a regular starter as Coventry reached the FA Cup semi-finals and seems certain to finish in the top ten of the Championship.

It should go without saying that Kitching needs to be a little more disciplined next season, but he’s done well overall since joining from Barnsley last summer, and the club’s fans aren’t too concerned.
