When Jhon Duran scored from the bench in Aston Villa’s season opener against West Ham in August, few could have predicted what came next

Duran has scored five match-winning goals for Aston Villa this season, in

cluding the Champions League winner against Bayern Munich, and has signed a new long-term contract with the club until 2030.

Despite coming off the bench in all seven Premier League appearances, the Colombian has six goals, outscoring Ollie Watkins, who has started every game.

Duran has six goals in ten games across all competitions, scoring once every 52 minutes and enjoying every minute on the pitch.

It’s a level of effectiveness that no other forward on the planet can match, including Manchester City’s Erling Haaland, Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane, and Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappe.

Perhaps more impressively, Duran’s Premier League scoring rate of 1.9 goals per 90 minutes is the highest in the competition’s history, surpassing Michy Batsuayi at Chelsea (1.8 – 2016/17), Takumi Minamino at Liverpool (1.5 – 2021/22), and Haaland (1.4 – 2024/25).

Duran even outperformed probably the greatest super sub in competition history, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who scored 1.3 goals per 90 minutes in Manchester United’s treble-winning 1998/99 season.

The powerful Colombian is hitting levels at the age of 20 that even the great Cristiano Ronaldo could not match, since he did not reach double figures for goals at United until he was 22 – 17 in the 2006/07 season.

Duran brings more than just precise finishing to the field; he’s strong, powerful, quick, and has the football acumen to put himself in dangerous situations.

As FBref points out, he is in the top 8% of strikers in Europe in terms of shots per 90 minutes and, predictably, in the top 1% for non-penalty goals.
