Five players who will fuel the growth of power-speed hybrids in MLB

For years, baseball was becoming into a game based solely on power and analytics. Home runs and strikeouts dominated.

But today’s players, most notably Ronald Acuna Jr. of the Atlanta Braves and Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Dodgers, are shattering the norm, reviving an exhilarating blend of power and speed.

They are reminiscent of previous players such as Rickey Henderson (four seasons of at least 20 home runs and 53 steals), Alex Rodriguez (42 home runs and 46 steals in 1998), and Barry Bonds (five seasons of 30-30 and a 40-40 performance in 1996).

MLB is seeing a comeback of the power-speed combo, which is affecting how teams approach the game. The emergence of these dual-threat athletes encourages managers to rethink their strategy, prioritizing adaptability and athleticism over raw power.

Acuna Jr. and Ohtani have revived the popularity of this explosive playing style. Here are five more players that can impress at the plate and on the bases. All statistics are through Wednesday’s games.

RF Fernando Tatis Jr. | San Diego Padres.

Five players who'll continue rise of power-speed hybrids in MLB

After missing the 2022 season due to a PED suspension, Tatis Jr. returned in 2023 and quickly reestablished himself as a dual threat. He hit 25 home runs and stole 29 bases, finishing 14th in MVP voting

While injuries restricted his output in 2024, Tatis (19 HR, 10 SB) has the potential to develop into a consistent 30-30 player at only 25 years old.

Bobby Witt Jr., shortstop, Kansas City Royals

Witt Jr. joined the 30-30 club in 2023, hitting 30 home runs and stealing 49 bases, before becoming the first shortstop to have successive 30-30 seasons in 2024 (32 HR, 30 SB).

Witt is reinventing the shortstop position with his uncommon combination of power and speed, while still providing outstanding defense.

OF Corbin Carroll | Arizona Diamondbacks

Carroll has 21 home runs and 29 stolen bases this season, following 25 home runs and 54 stolen bases in 2023.

Carroll joins Witt Jr. as the 11th player in AL/NL history to have repeated 20-20 seasons by the age of 23.

RF Kyle Tucker, Houston Astros

Tucker has 20 home runs and 11 stolen bases through 70 games this season. He may not receive as much attention as the other players on this list, but his 25-plus home run and 25-plus steal seasons are the type of quiet production that keeps the Astros a regular contender.

Tucker reached 20-20 in two consecutive seasons: 2022 (30 HRs, 25 SBs) and 2023 (29 HRs, 30 SBs).

Though injuries hindered Tucker in 2024, he is still young enough to return to similar levels in future seasons.

IF/OF Jazz Chisholm Jr. | New York Yankees

Chisholm Jr.’s attitude and explosiveness make him one of the most fascinating players to watch when healthy. He can hit, steal, and cover ground in the outfield, all while adding personality to the lineup.

With time divided between the Marlins and the Yankees, Chisholm Jr. has 22 home runs and 36 stolen bases this season. At just 26, Chilsolm Jr. gives the Yankees reason for optimism about more power/speed seasons from him.
