The Colorado Rockies defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-2 due to a ninth-inning mistake

Brenton Doyle scored the game-winning run after a throwing error in the ninth inning to lift the Colorado Rockies to a 3-2 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday night. This game also marked the comeback of Rockies pitcher Antonio Senzatela after Tommy John surgery.

Ezequiel Tovar and Hunter Goodman both homered for the Rockies, who defeated the Diamondbacks for only the third time in 11 games this season.

“Pitching won us today, and we had great performances from the bullpen,” Tovar remarked through an interpreter.

Ketel Marte launched a two-run homer for the Diamondbacks, who currently occupy the second NL wild card place, one game ahead of the New York Mets and two games ahead of Atlanta.

Doyle reached base in the ninth inning with a single off Ryan Thompson (7-5), then stole second.

Ryan McMahon was purposely walked, and Brendan Rodgers hit a ground ball to Marte, who attempted to initiate a double play. However, Marte’s throw to shortstop Geraldo Perdomo was off-target, allowing Doyle to score.

“He just yanked his throw off the line,” Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo explained. “It would have been a big double play.”

Seth Halvorsen (2-0) threw two scoreless innings.

Senzatela, a 29-year-old right-hander, allowed two runs and four hits over three-plus innings, striking out two and walking two. He fired 42 of his 67 pitches for strikes, average 95 mph and 39 fastballs. He also used 15 sliders, eight changeups, and five curveballs.

Senzatela’s 2022 season ended prematurely on August 18 in St. Louis, when he tore his left ACL while covering first base on an infield grounder.
