After much conjecture, it is official: Max Pacioretty is joining the Toronto Maple Leafs training camp on a professional tryout. The 35-year-old left winger has six 30-goal seasons under his belt and was the Montreal Canadiens’ captain from 2015 to 2018.

Pacioretty’s Path and What He Provides
The Maple Leafs are taking a chance for a very basic reason. While young and interesting, their left-wing depth leaves plenty to be desired as a contender. Matthew Knies, Easton Cowan, and Nicholas Robertson
Though most hockey is played at equal strength, perhaps the assumption here is that Toronto is so good that they can compensate for his shortcomings. They already dominate even-strength play, so Pacioretty’s experience as a captain both off and on the ice may be more important. Plus, there’s always the possibility that he’ll regain his form—this isn’t a no-risk acquisition, but it’s difficult to imagine this veteran having an epiphany and scoring 30 goals again.
Finally, it’s always a good idea to consider all choices. If the Maple Leafs believe Pacioretty adds value to their team, this PTO will transform into a contract with the Blue and White. Perhaps he could help the young guns?
