Breaking News: Mets announcers criticize Angels player’s dispute with umpires. “I would not argue that out of embarrassment.”
There have been numerous instances of commentators being critical of umpiring. What’s more unusual is the criticism of umpires by players. That’s what Steve Gelbs and Ron Darling did during their SNY coverage of the New York Mets’ Friday night game against the Los Angeles Angels. They delved into Angels outfielder Mickey Moniak’s protest over a call that he attempted to bunt at a pitch that hit him in the knee (making it his second strike rather than a hit-by-pitch):
Moniak took a ball on the next pitch before striking out on the fourth pitch of the at bat. The Mets finished the game 5-1. However, this did not end Moniak’s argument or Gelbs’ and Darling’s roasting of it. Moniak appeared to be too complaining. And it’s funny to hear the opposing team’s TV commentators mock it. This is especially true given that announcers are now condemning the critics rather than the umpires.
