Tyrone Mings could return to action for Aston Villa as early as September, according to manager Unai Emery.

The centre-back sustained a terrible ACL injury in the first half of Villa’s season opener against Newcastle last year, but despite the severity of the injury, he has made significant progress in his recovery.

Mings appeared in all bar one of Emery’s 25 Premier League games in the 2022/23 season after joining in November 2022. After Mings was stretchered off at St James’ Park, Clement Lenglet signed on loan to cover for Pau Torres and ended up playing.

Villa are on pre-season tour in the United States, but Emery only has two senior centre-backs in his squad, and Ezri Konsa will not return until next week after representing England at Euro 2024.

Diego Carlos was sent off in Wednesday night’s defeat to RB Leipzig in New Jersey, but Emery dismissed the possibility of signing another defender in the last month of the transfer window.
