Tiger Woods missed the cut for the final two days at The Open, but one golfer has shared a story from when the 15-time major winner was at the top of his abilities.
Tiger Woods once left security at The Open totally red-faced after being refused entry at Royal Troon.
The four-time Claret Jug winner has since fallen on hard feet and is no longer in contention to win it this year after failing to make the cut. Woods had a six-over-par round on day two, finishing 14 over par and eight shots above the cut line.
Woods has struggled in the Open in recent years, missing the cut in four of his past five appearances since 2015, however he tied for sixth in 2018.
This is a sharp contrast to the 48-year-old’s best years. Between 1998 and 2006, Woods won the Open four times and only missed the top ten twice. However, that did not stop the 15-time major winner from having an unusual meeting with a security guard at the height of his popularity.
PGA golfer Michael Kim discussed the event on X earlier this week, a few days before The Open at Royal Troon began. “At the Open Championship, players get a clip as credentials to get you into the locker room and everywhere else,” Kim told me.
“In the mid-2000s, Tiger forgot his clip one day and was coming into the locker room when a security guard stopped him and asked for his credentials. Tiger looks around, notices a large billboard with his name and face on it, points to it, says, ‘That’s my credentials,’ and walks inside the locker room.
