Latest News: Ex-LSU QB A STAR stole $74K from his high school alma institution, lawsuit claims.
A lawsuit accuses former LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell of accepting a $74,000 check written as a donation to the Mobile, Alabama, high school football squad he used to coach.
WKRG Sports reported on Saturday that Chris Knowles, a local businessman, wrote the check to Russel to assist Williamson High School in purchasing new football weight room equipment. However, the school apparently never received the funds, and Knowles ceased paying the check after Russell failed to provide a receipt for the donation and stopped receiving phone calls.
The plaintiff in the lawsuit, Navigator Credit Union, is now suing Russell for a $55,000 share of the check.
A Mobile County public school official told WKRG Sports that Russell was “relieved of his volunteer coaching duties” in the middle of last football season. He began coaching at his alma mater, Williamson, in 2018.
Russell, 38, was a standout quarterback for LSU from 2004 to 2006. In three seasons as a starter, he passed for 6,625 yards and 52 touchdowns. The Oakland Raiders then selected him as the first overall pick in the 2007 NFL draft, although his professional career lasted only three years.
