Could Jeff Blashill, the former head coach of the Detroit Red Wings, get another chance to coach in the NHL?
Blashill appears to be a candidate to lead the San Jose Sharks, according to Elliotte Friedman, who stated on his 32 Thoughts podcast, “I think Blashill is someone they’re considering.”
Blashill, 50, has been an assistant coach with the Tampa Bay Lightning for the previous two years. He was the Red Wings’ head coach for seven seasons, from 2015-16 to 2021-22, and had a record of 204-261-72.
The Red Wings made the playoffs in Blashill’s first season, losing to Tampa Bay in the first round, before embarking on a reconstruction that has seen them miss the postseason for eight years and counting.
“I would like to see Jeff Blashill get a second chance,” Friedman remarked. “I would like to see what people learn after their first time through.”
Blashill was the Grand Rapids Griffins’ head coach for three seasons, winning the Calder Cup in his first season in 2013.
Friedman also named Marco Sturm, head coach of the AHL Ontario Reign, and Ryan Warsofsky, an assistant with the Sharks, as candidates.
Five more teams are looking for a head coach (Los Angeles, New Jersey, Seattle, Toronto, and Winnipeg). Friedman stated that the Kings are considering hiring interim coach Jim Hiller, a former Red Wings player and assistant coach, their permanent coach. He also mentioned Dan Bylsma and Todd McLellan, former Red Wings assistants, as potential contenders in Seattle.
