BREAIKNG NEWS: Barnsley new coach speculation quelled as former Doncaster Rovers man commits to Leyton Orient
The 44-year-old had been connected to Oakwell’s head coach post, which became available last week after Neill Collins was fired. However, he has set Orient fans’ concerns at ease by signing new contracts.
He has been rewarded for his outstanding performance at Brisbane Road with a three-year contract. Wellens remarked, “I’m quite optimistic about what the next three years will bring us. We have a group of young players who can progress, and the fact that we ended 11 points shy of the playoffs despite the number of injuries we had this season excites me for the future.
“I enjoy working for this club, and the relationships I’ve established here have all contributed to our success thus far. I wouldn’t have signed if I wasn’t enthused about the club’s future, and I intend to help take it to the next level.
“I’d like to thank everyone for their support, and my message to fans is that my goal is to reach the best level that I can. That will never change, and I hope we can accomplish it together at Leyton Orient.

Barnsley have also been linked with MK Dons manager Mike Williamson, while reports say Dominik Thalhammer was sought before work visa complications arose.
Martin Devaney is presently serving as temporary manager, preparing the Reds for the League One play-offs.
Martin Ling, Leyton Orient’s director of football, said: “It’s fantastic that we’ve been able to secure Richie’s future so soon after the season ended.” As everyone knows, the summer is a crucial period for every football team, and this news will only help us with our summer recruitment.
“Players want to play for Richie Wellens, and he and his staff have a demonstrated track record of developing players. We have a wonderful relationship, and I’m excited to work closely with him this summer and over the next three years as we strive to improve in all areas of the football club.”
