Former Alpine CEO Otmar Szafnauer stated that the driver he would partner with Max Verstappen to give a challenge would be Lando Norris.

The collaboration of Norris and Verstappen is not a new idea, and it appeared to be a possibility until the McLaren driver signed a new contract with the Woking side prior to the 2024 season, but Szafnauer feels he is the only driver capable of competing with Verstappen.

Is Max one of the best Formula One drivers ever? Absolutely. “I believe he has proven that enough,” the 24-year-old told Sky Sports.

“He’s in a squad that he’s very comfortable in, and a lot of things are built up around him, so for anyone, even a Max from a few years ago, to go in against the Max of today is incredibly difficult.
“So I don’t believe it’s a question of ‘are you terrified or not scared?’ I don’t think I’d ever be afraid of competing against anyone, but if you join a team, are you in a position to challenge someone right immediately, and are you comfortable doing so? I believe it is a ‘no’ for any motorist.

“It takes time to adapt and get into place, and competing against the world’s top driver is not the best option. This is not a wise decision

“But I’d love to race against Max. I’ve loved some of our previous skirmishes and am looking forward to the ones we’ll have this year.”
