The Atlanta Falcons had two picks in the sixth round of the NFL Draft, and the first (selection 186) went to running back Jase McClellan of the University of Alabama.
After a couple of days of focusing solely on defense, the Falcons addressed their backfield depth with the selection of McClellan, who has prototypical stature (5’10, 221 pounds) and the type of three-down skill set that should give him a chance at the professional level.
McClellan appears to be the frontrunner to win Atlanta’s RB3 contest, trailing Bijan Robinson and Tyler Allgeier. He lacks explosiveness, which has helped to his continued presence on the roster, but he has exceptional vision and can play behind a variety of blocking schemes.
Jase is a terrific pass blocker going into the league, which is a huge plus for any young RB. He also has some good receiver qualities (soft hands, decent route running footwork).
McClellan had 1,027 yards from scrimmage and eight touchdowns while at Alabama in 2023. He had 24 total touchdowns during his four-year collegiate career and is expected to fill in as a spot starter if the Falcons’ injury bug strikes.
