The New York Jets emphasized establishing their offensive line around Aaron Rodgers on Day 1 of the 2024 NFL Draft, selecting Penn State offensive tackle Olu Fashanu in the first pick.
Fashanu provides the Jets with immediate offensive line depth as well as a potential long-term left tackle solution. While many Jets fans would have liked Brock Bowers, Fashanu serves as both a win-now and a long-term solution.
The Jets’ task is far from done, though. The team still has eight draft picks to make (or trade) in the next two days. Here’s a look at when the Jets will pick again tonight.
When do the New York Jets make their next pick?
The Jets have just one pick on Day 2 of the 2024 NFL Draft. That choice is expected to be the 72nd overall selection in the third round. The team does not have a second-round pick as a result of the Aaron Rodgers trade from last year.
With seven picks on Day 3 following Thursday night’s trade-down, there’s a fair likelihood the Jets will try to move up into the second round. However, they now have only one pick in the third round tonight.
In recent years, the Jets’ Day 2 draft picks have been more flops than winners, but that trend appears to be changing. Breece Hall and Joe Tippmann provide the Jets with two solid offensive foundations on which to build.
Aside from role players like Jeremy Ruckert and Ashtyn Davis, the rest of this roster isn’t particularly intriguing. Jachai Polite, Jabari Zuniga, and Denzel Mims were utter busts who had little impact during their brief careers in the NFL.
Chuma Edoga has matured into a quality peripheral starter with the Dallas Cowboys, but his time with the Jets was substandard. The same is true for Elijah Moore, who was released after only two seasons with the team.
The Jets’ Day 2 pick(s) in 2024 should follow the pattern of recent years, rather than the late Mike Maccagnan/early Joe Douglas draft classes.
History shows that teams may still discover solid starting-caliber players with the 72nd overall choice. Germaine Pratt, Alim McNeill, and Abraham Lucas have each established themselves as legitimate starters for their respective teams.
Josh Jones has moved around a few organizations but has started 24 games in the NFL. He will compete for playing time with the Baltimore Ravens in 2024.
Garrett Williams, a Syracuse product, missed the first half of his rookie season due to injury before returning to start six of the final nine games. He’s presently projected as the team’s starting nickel cornerback next season.
