Toronto Raptors standout RJ Barrett is in mourning following the passing of his younger brother, Nathan Tyler Barrett.

The Barrett family, along with the Raptors and Canada Basketball, released a statement on Thursday announcing Nathan Barrett’s passing on Tuesday. He passed away surrounded by family, church members, and friends.

Rowan Barrett, the father of RJ and Nathan, serves as the general manager of Canada Basketball.

“While our family is deeply saddened by this profound loss, we will hold dear the memories and moments shared with Nathan,” the statement read.

Describing Nathan as a young man of strong character who was admired for his thoughtfulness, kindness, love, compassion, creativity, and determination, the statement expressed the family’s grief and appreciation for the outpouring of support.

No details regarding the cause of Nathan’s death were provided.

RJ Barrett, a native of Mississauga, Ontario, did not participate in the Raptors’ game against the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday.

The family has requested privacy during this difficult time but expressed gratitude for the love, support, and prayers they have received.

“Although Nathan’s time with us was short, his memory will forever remain in our hearts,” the statement concluded.
