The Packers are set to generate $10.5 million in salary cap flexibility by parting ways with inside linebacker De’Vondre Campbell this Wednesday.

The Green Bay Packers are set to release inside linebacker De’Vondre Campbell on Wednesday, a move that will add more than $10 million to their salary cap space, according to a source at PackersNews. This release will coincide with the start of the NFL’s new calendar year, which aligns with the onset of free agency at 3 p.m. Wednesday. By timing the release for Wednesday, the Packers can designate it as a June 1 release, allowing them to gain a larger portion of salary cap relief than if they were to cut him immediately.

This move is part of the Packers’ broader strategy to create salary cap room, enabling them to potentially become more active in free agency. Among their priorities are pursuing a safety and possibly players in other positions, as well as re-signing some of their own free agents like cornerback/returner Keisean Nixon, linebacker Eric Wilson, and tight end Tyler Davis.

Campbell’s departure will free up $10.57 million in salary cap space for the Packers, who are anticipated to be over $20 million under the $255.4 million salary cap at the onset of the new year. However, this official number may differ based on any accounting adjustments and additional moves made by the league.

The Packers are transitioning to a 4-3 defense under newly hired coordinator Jeff Hafley and are seeking a younger counterpart for inside linebacker Quay Walker. Isaiah McDuffie, who performed well when Campbell was injured last season, could potentially step up as a starter in Hafley’s defense.

Campbell, 31, had an exceptional All-Pro season in 2021, but injuries limited his impact in subsequent seasons. His release will not only provide immediate salary cap relief but also allow the Packers to defer some of his remaining cap charges to future years.

The Packers are also looking to create additional cap space through potential moves involving left tackle David Bakhtiari’s contract, although there’s no immediate urgency as no roster bonus is due. They may consider releasing Bakhtiari or negotiating a significant salary cut to create further cap flexibility.
