Newcastle United’s summer plans may have changed due to four first-team stars

As the season begins to grind to a close, attention will soon start to shift towards how much business Newcastle United can do in the summer transfer market. Pesky Premier League profit and sustainability rules are set to be binned and replaced with top flight bosses’ new regulations of choice, meaning there may be more financial wiggle room for the Magpies in the off-season.

Newcastle are officially back on track on the pitch, picking up 10 points from a possible 12 of late to give themselves a fighting chance of reaching some form of European competition come mid-May. That eventuality would go a long way to persuading prospective purchases to join the Tyneside revolution.

But do Newcastle actually need a dramatic overhaul? The club’s summer plans may have shifted due to four first-team squad members.

Firstly there is Lewis Hall. The young left-back who on Saturday was confirmed as a permanent Newcastle player when the terms of his loan agreement were finally met. With the Magpies now set to finish in the top 14, Hall’s transfer obligation has finally been reached.

Much has been made of Hall’s game time, or lack of, as well as Dan Burn’s performances on the left-hand side of the defence. The former Chelsea full-back has enjoyed an increase of minutes recently, with Burn being moved to the heart of the backline to cover for the crocked Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles.

Earlier in the campaign, plenty of supporters were hoping a new left-back would be drafted in whenever the next lavish recruitment drive arrived. Now, after a hefty £28m purchase of 19-year-old Hall, Eddie Howe could quite easily decide the teenager, Dan Burn and a fit-again Matt Targett is enough to see Newcastle through on the left of his defence.

Moving further forward on the pitch, Newcastle’s midfield already looks replenished enough to enter next season without any new additions. It may not feel like it at present due to the never-ending injury crisis at St James’ Park but when Lewis Miley, Joe Willock, Joelinton and Sandro Tonali all return from either injury or suspension, Howe will have plenty of options to choose from.

Miley’s incredible progress this season is certainly reason not to splash out on a new midfielder. If the plan is to keep the academy graduate on Tyneside rather than loaning him out, adding another man in the middle into the mix would likely stunt his growth.

The same can be said for Elliot Anderson. After overcoming injury issues of his own, the fellow Geordie youngster is beginning to find his feet in the Premier League with some solid showings in recent weeks. Saturday’s impressive display in the 4-0 rout of Tottenham left fans, and Howe, purring as Anderson looks to finish his disrupted campaign with a flourish

“I think we’ll see that steadily improve through time. I think he will be a goalscorer or a goal creator,” the Newcastle boss said at full-time. “We’ve seen that through training now for a long period of time. I can’t speak highly enough of how he’s come back from his injury. I think he’s in a really good place.”

Anderson and Miley can play a big part in Newcastle’s short-term having proven their worth in a testing campaign. Injury-free spells for both youngsters could see them hold down regular spots in Howe’s plans, saving the need for a lavish purchase in the centre of the park.

Finally, there is a question be asked around Callum Wilson: Does he stay or does he go? Well, there was significant interest in the former Bournemouth hitman in January but Newcastle kept hold of the formidable forward only to lose him to two bizarre injuries soon after.

Wilson has always struggled with bumps, bruises and more serious injury issues but has always bounced back when finally returning to the pitch. When fit and firing, it is a no brainer to keep him in the side. However, the ongoing fitness problems will no doubt leave some wondering if this is the summer to cash in while still possible.

Should Wilson depart, finding another striker to battle it out with Alexander Isak becomes pivotal. However, as everyone knows, goal scorers don’t come cheap.

Howe has always had huge admiration for Wilson – both in the north east and down on the south coast. Should the player want another year in black and white, it would be hard to see the Newcastle boss refuse that request.

But whatever happens with Wilson this summer will shape how and where the Magpies spend their money – and will have a knock on effect as to how much, or how little, they have in the bank to strengthen elsewhere.

Thankfully, Hall, Anderson and Miley have impressed, despite their relative inexperience, to take some pressure off the scouting system at Newcastle. Wilson is the fourth big-name who could have a big say in who arrives on these shores come the summer.
