The Iowa Hawkeyes plan to retire Caitlin Clark’s number 22 jersey.
She made the announcement a few days after her historic NCAA career came to an end at Iowa’s end-of-season celebration ceremony.
With 3,951 points, an average of 28.4 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 8.2 assists, she ends as the all-time leading scorer in college basketball.
Clark, 22, is expected to be the first pick in Monday’s draft and is expected to join the WNBA.
Following the announcement, she spoke to her fans and said, “I am really grateful that you all allowed me to live out my dream every single day; you have inspired me as much as I inspired you. I will always consider this place to be home because it has been so special.”
Her collegiate career came to an end on Sunday when Iowa lost the NCAA championship game to South Carolina, the undefeated team.
Although Clark’s career at Iowa ended without a national title, she did win the Wooden Award and the Naismith National Player of the Year for the second straight year, two of the biggest individual college basketball honors.
Her impact on women’s college basketball will not be forgotten, with the final pulling in a viewership of 18.9 million, which was more than the men’s final at 14.8 million.
In the 2024 WNBA Draft, the Indiana Fever will pick number one overall, and it is anticipated that they will select Clark.
Her impact is already being felt throughout the league, as the Fever will have 36 of their 40 games nationally televised, up from just one during the previous season.
On Monday, April 15, at 19:30 Eastern Time (00:30 BST), the WNBA Draft will take place.
