Cricket Australia has issued a statement in support of national coach Justin Langer, looking ahead to a significant period for him and the team amidst ongoing speculation surrounding his future.
In the statement released on Wednesday afternoon, Cricket Australia praised Langer for his remarkable efforts in shaping the culture, values, and conduct of the Australian men’s team since assuming the role. Langer assumed the position of national coach in 2018, succeeding Darren Lehmann in the aftermath of the sandpaper scandal that shook Australian cricket during the Test series in South Africa.
Concerns arose following Australia’s recent disappointing limited-overs tour of the West Indies and Bangladesh, where they suffered consecutive 4-1 defeats in T20I series ahead of the upcoming T20 World Cup, scheduled from October 17 to November 14. Despite participating in six previous editions of the T20 World Cup, Australia has yet to claim victory in the tournament, which debuted in 2007.
Nick Hockley, the CEO of Cricket Australia, expressed confidence in Langer’s leadership, stating that his efforts have reinstated public trust in the national team, a squad that all Australians can take pride in. Hockley reiterated that Langer is under contract as Head Coach until the middle of the following year, with the immediate focus on a successful campaign at the T20 World Cup, followed by the highly anticipated home Ashes defense, promising an exciting series and summer of cricket in Australia.
