Liverpool broke another record despite losing ground in Premier League title race after Manchester United draw
The Reds lost their place at the top of the table in a 2-2 draw at Old Trafford, with Mohamed Salah’s 84th-minute penalty securing a point despite dominating for most of the game.
And Jurgen Klopp’s side will certainly consider this game a missed opportunity, especially after it was revealed they had recorded an unprecedented statistic in Premier League history.
The Merseyside giants’ 28 shots in Sunday’s clash with United meant they have now totalled 62 shots in their two league matches against their bitter rivals.
This is the most shots a side has ever had against a single opponent in a season since Opta began compiling records in 2003, asserting Liverpool’s dominant displays in both encounters.
But the Reds have not put pay to this advantage, as they have failed to beat United on all three occasions this campaign, drawing twice in the league and being knocked out of the FA Cup in a 4-3 thriller.
Luis Diaz had put Klopp’s men ahead midway through the first half, before the title challengers squandered a host of chances to double their lead, with Salah forcing saves from Andre Onana, and Darwin Nunez also going close.
The game was then turned on its head as United hit back with stunning strikes from Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo, leaving it to Salah to spare his team’s blushes from the spot.
Liverpool’s shot record marked the second time in a week they had entered the history books, after they shattered a Premier League possession record in their 3-1 win over Sheffield United in their previous game.
