Auburn enthusiasts got their first glimpse of the 2024 Auburn football squad on Saturday at Jordan-Hare Stadium during the annual A-Day game.

Following approximately an hour of warm-ups and drills, Hugh Freeze’s squad took to the field for the public scrimmage, offering some noteworthy observations from the proceedings. It took some time for the offense to find its rhythm. As Auburn cycled through its quarterbacks during the offensive drives, the sequence mirrored the order seen throughout spring practices: Payton Thorne, Holden Geriner, Hank Brown, and Walker White.

The offense sparked with a 49-yard pass from Brown to standout freshman wide receiver Cam Coleman, though it ultimately settled for a field goal. Thorne’s subsequent drive showcased marked improvement as he effectively spread the ball among multiple receivers.

One standout from Auburn’s A-Day was Cam Coleman. His standout moment came with a 66-yard touchdown reception from Thorne, marking the team’s first touchdown of the day following five field goals. Coleman concluded the game with four receptions, 92 yards, and a touchdown.

Auburn’s defensive line displayed resilience, particularly in the red zone, where they thwarted offensive advances, forcing field goals. Notable contributors included Jayson Jones, Gage Keys, Trill Carter, Quientrail Jamison-Travis, Keldric Faulk, and Jalen McLeod. Freshman Malik Blocton also made appearances with the first unit at times, while Keys, Jamison-Travis, and defensive back Jerrin Thompson were credited with sacks.

The wide receiver corps exhibited notable improvement compared to the previous season. Notable performances came from Cam Coleman and Cam Brown, with the starting lineup consistent with spring practices featuring Coleman, Robert Lewis, and Sam Jackson V. Thorne’s connection with Lewis for a 40-yard pass and subsequent plays further highlighted the receivers’ enhanced capabilities.

Despite Alex McPherson’s absence due to a hamstring injury, freshman Towns McGough stepped up admirably in the kicking department, showcasing his reliability with successful kicks from various distances, including a game-winning 58-yarder to secure a 28-27 victory for the offense.
